it’s easy being greenER
If you set your mind to it.
We minimise waste by re-using, recycling or composting, and making choices that will have the least impact on the environment (which sometimes means choosing not to save a quick dollar). We’ve made the following choices when it comes to running our business and hope that many others will start to do the same.
RE-USEABLE & biodegradable
For tasting our gelato you’ll be served with re-useable spoons (the humble metal teaspoon). If you choose to have a cup and a spoon for your gelato, we hope you will be pleased to know we’ve elected to use fully compostable containers and spoons. Our take-home containers are also fully compostable containers, or, you can use a ReturnR canister. All you need to do is pay a $6 deposit for the twin walled stainless steel ReturnR canister which keeps your gelato chilled on the trip home. Once you’ve finished your gelato you simply rinse the container and then return it to us or any cafe in the ReturnR network to have it refilled or your deposit refunded. Then repeat! To learn more about the ReturnR community click here.
COMPOSTING
We love fresh fruit and use lots of it to create our gelato. Instead of putting our fruit scraps, and coffee grinds, into general waste to be sent to landfill, these scraps are put into Bayside Council’s Green bin. This organic waste then gets recycled into high-quality compost used by Victorian farmers.
green power
Little Sky only uses 100% green power. Its a conscious choice we can all make and sends a really good message to our power companies that the days of fossil fuels and burning coal like there’s no 2030 is over. Just ask the kids.
B CORP CERTIFIED 2022 - 2025
Little Sky’s B Corp Certification Score - 2022
In 2022 Little Sky Gelato became the first Australian gelato/ice-cream shop to be B Corp certified. B Corporations represent a global movement of people using business as a force for good. These businesses meet higher standards of social and environmental impact, transparency, and have accountability to stakeholders, rather than just shareholders. Each B Corp is benchmarked against the world’s most sustainable and ethical businesses.
The B Corp impact score is a measure of how a company's operations and business model impact its workers, community, environment, and customers. To obtain the B Corp Certification, a company must receive a score of at least 80 points on the assessment. Little Sky achieved a score of 90.7 (the median score for ordinary businesses who complete the assessment is 50.9).
In March 2025 we made the difficult decision not to renew our certification due to a 100% increase in re-certification fees – a big amount a small business! However, this doesn’t mean we’ve walked away from our commitment to being a sustainable and ethical business. The only thing that’s changed is that we no longer hold the official B Corp certification.
